Command and Control
The Maritime Volunteer Service offers Command and Control skills and experience to
support event organisers and at emergencies or exercises.
The skills include:
- Command of deployed resources both ashore and afloat,
- Advanced radio communications with call logging and message handling
- Accurate plotting and reporting of incidents using charts and maps
- Using computers to record events, incidents and actions
- Preparation and presentation of relevant reports to those in charge of the event
or emergency
Examples include:
- International Fleet Review in the Solent in 2005 where a small MVS team aboard the
event control ship - HMS Albion - controlled the deployment of 20 marshall craft.
- International Festivals of the Sea in 1998, 2001 and 2005 where an MVS team deployed
RIBs and launches to control the safe berthing of over 400 pleasure craft within
HM Naval Base, Portsmouth.
- Support for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) within their Weymouth Control
Centre during the early days of the MV Napoli grounding incident in Lyme Bay.
- Support for the MCA within their Lee-on-the-Solent Control Centre following the sinking
of the MV Ice Prince whose timber cargo was being washed ashore.
- Support for Bournemouth Borough Council through the local MCA Sector Manager during
the Bournemouth Air Festival when MVS craft were deployed to maintain an extensive
safety zone.
